Among the many changes brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic was a drastic change in the economy and labor market climate—that includes people losing jobs due to affected companies that had to close their operations. Major industries that showed promising potentials to prosper and create bulks of job such as in Transportation, Logistics, Hotel, Restaurant and Tourism are now badly hit by the impact of said pandemic.
In light of the above-said challenge calls for an intensified spread of an updated Labor Market Information (LMI) through the Career Guidance Advocacy Program (CGAP) of the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) to help disseminate employment-related information to the career guidance practitioners and students who would soon pursue their choice of career.
Conducted through the convergence of the DOLE, Department of Education, and Public Employment Service Office, CGAP is aimed at guiding the Grade 10 students to make sound career choices and help address the perennial dilemma of unemployment due to jobs and skills mismatch. Under normal circumstances, CGAP is usually held by DOLE and PESO who visit the schools to hold face-to-face LMI orientations for the students. Registered Guidance Counselors, on the other hand, administer personality tests that help students determine their potential skills and professions in the future.
With the discouragement of mass gatherings—including deferment of school activities—in view of the government’s COVID-19 health and safety measures, the DOLE-National Capital Region (NCR) switched to virtual CGAP to reach more students and career guidance practitioners in Metro Manila.
In a report released by Field Office Director Rowella V. Grande of DOLE-NCR CAMANAVA, they were able to reach 39,021 individuals (equivalent to 72 schools) within the cities of Caloocan, Malabon, Navotas and Valenzuela through their virtual LMI orientation series in 2020 using DOLE-NCR’s audio visual presentation on “COVID-19: How is the Pandemic Reshaping the Labor Market in Metro Manila.”
“For this year, we may not be able to conduct face-to-face orientations like what we have been doing in the past years but CGAP will continue through our virtual platforms,” said Director Grande.
“The material will also help the students understand the complexity of the labor climate in the new normal but most importantly, it will give hope to the students that there are still opportunities waiting for them,” she added.
