On January 20, 2022, the Quezon City Public Employment Service Office (QC PESO) tapped the Department of Labor and Employment – National Capital Region (DOLE-NCR) in its effort to provide its basic service in employment – human resource development. Despite the health crisis, QC PESO initiated an online system of facilitating its internship program called the “Online Internship Program” or OIP, which is currently on its second year.
As partner of QC PESO in the promotion of jobseekers’ employability, DOLE-NCR participated in the online sessions with “employment coaching” and “entrepreneurship” as topics to present a holistic career path to the participants. DOLE-NCR was represented by Senior Labor and Employment Officer Ryan Roberto E. Delos Reyes of the Employment Promotion and Workers Welfare Division as their resource speaker.
In his sessions, Delos Reyes stressed the importance of understanding the wage employment and entrepreneurship as career options so as to enable the entrants to the labor market to have informed career decisions. He also emphasized the importance of preparation or doing all the necessary “leg work” in whatever career decision one has to take. Included in the sessions are strategies in acing employment, the changes from physical to digital platforms, the surge of e-commerce and the phases of business cycle; among others.
During the interaction, students inquired on approaches in establishing business and the possible business initiative in view of the current situation. Participants likewise inquired on the skills preference of the employers considering the stiff competition in the labor market. The interaction with students, facilitated by the PESO personnel, is an indication of interest of the participants to learn and adapt as the situation transitions to “new normal.”
Attended by students from various higher education institutions of Quezon City, the OIP is composed of orientation seminars to familiarize students of the various facets of employment including the enhancement of values and positive work ethics relative to employability and human relations. Students undergoing the OIP will be deployed to the various departments of the local government to complete their necessary hours of internship.
The OIP is one of the innovations initiated by QC PESO to enable employment facilitation and capacity building in the midst of the pandemic.
